The stages of cancer at initial diagnosis or relapse, are for many, if not for most people who are affected, life-changing situations that will involve several critical stages of a cancer journey. Having the appropriate support at the outset and beyond, positively impacts survival and personal wellbeing. Having the necessary support at key stages e.g. the initial consultation with oncology to discuss the stage of the condition, the treatment options, the side effects of therapy, and the aim of the treatment e.g. cure or containment has been proven to positivelyand significantly impact treatment outcomes. Hence the purpose of an advocacy service is to assist with the communication-related and support needs of the patients and carers – e.g.
clarification and effective communication of cancer-related and welfare information so that the patientcan make informed decisions about prescription and treatment as well as income-related issues.
'Hear for You' will involve:
- Attending key oncology consultant appointments to support patients in making informed pre and post-diagnosis decisions about initial and subsequent cancer treatments, therapies, and their side effects;
- Making referrals to culturally appropriate existing support services;
- Advising on benefits and other available financial support from other agencies;
- Provide assistance to complete applications for available support and resources for cancer patients and carers, and
- Working within a community-based context.
The service will be launched February 2021.
